The Good Life in Austin Texas

The 7 Mysteries of Me, MeMe...who Me?

I have been tagged with the 7 mysteries of my life by my friends??!?!?!?!?

Paula SwaynePaula Swayne and new pal Sherry Scales Sherry Scales

Check out their blogs; Paula writes great Localism posts and Sherry is incredibly funny!

Seven things you may not know about me: The Crystal Ball Reveals

•1)  3m Half Marathon & RelayI have a love/hate relationship with running. I hate getting started but after the first mile or so my body realizes we are out for a run and I start enjoying the challenge and scenery etc.I have run 6 marathons and 1 ultra-marathon and I am currently training for the Austin 3M ½ marathon in February. I am not a health nut but enjoy the benefits of feeling better mentally and physically as well as eating pretty much anything I want without swelling up like Jaba the Hut! Something I find ridiculous are people who use a picture of themselves running in their profile or bio with tag-lines like "Going the extra mile" or "the marathon salesman".'s just plain is GOOFY! Runners don't care and you run the risk of alienating 95% of the population who thinks on a daily basis that they need more exercise!

•2)  I abhor liars, bullies and any person, group or entity that abuses a position of power to further their own self interests or abuse the rights and privileges of others. This has carried over into my business over time however, in the last few years I have become the "Voice of Reason" in many circumstances. I still do not respond well to threats, intimidation or coercion and sometimes feel compelled to take the Samuel Jackson approach for those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers... Okay, admittedly that's way over the top but as my previous broker used to say, "Russell is either the easiest person with whom to do a transaction or the most difficult and it's all in how you act at first".

•3)  Okay, now for something on the bright side. I love music, ALL KINDS of music and if you listened to my iPod you would certainly be baffled. As of today, I have 2764 songs to date with tunes from the 60's,70's,80's,90's and 2000's including Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Blues, Jazz, Soul, Funk, World beat, Rap, Reggae and surprisingly about 20% of the play lists are Gospel and Classical. Right now I am listening to an interesting jam with John Lee hooker and Miles Davis. My musical tastes swing wildly back and forth and today my favorite songs are the loudly obnoxious I don't wanna stop... by Ozzy Osborne to the semi-maudlin Say what you need to say by John Mayer. Ask me tomorrow and my choice of favorites will be completely different!

•4)  For a brief time I studied Film Making in College and developed a lifelong love of all kinds of movies. If you ask about my favorites, I would have to give you my top ten in a bunch of categories like Weirdest, Comedies, Dramas, War Movies, Blockbuster, Independent, Foreign (this would have to be divided into lists covering Italian, French, German, and oriental although only Akira Kurosawa for Japan and with the exception of Ang Lee, a couple of lesser known Chinese directors). I can say without a doubt that Eraserhead (1977) trailer which I saw in Film School is still the all time most bizarre film ever. The best part about my film hobby is that my wife is a willing participant and accompanies me to anything that I get a hankering to see!

•5)  I am a passionate reader and my whole family is in on this too. We've read to our children since birth and I can tell you that the day you walk by your child's room and see them reading for the first time, something they want to read, you get the most incredible sense of accomplishment. The really cool thing is that now that they are older we often trade ideas for books. We spend too much money on books but our local Westbank Community Library has just about anything you could want and they also have a lend program with the Downtown library for books not readily on hand. An interesting thing about the library is that each time you check out a book you are given a receipt that lists what it would cost at a local bookstore. Towards the end of the year the tally can get very high. My daughter was there the other day and the Lewis Family has racked up over $4,800 in savings on books this year!

•6)  I love traveling as much as just about anything in the world and again, my wife is a willing partner in our wanderlust. We have traveled all over the United States, been to Europe twice and have spent time in several places in the Caribbean. My favorite parts of the world (besides Austin) are New York, Paris (I would like to live there for 3 or 4 months at a time) the countryside of Emilia Romagna in Northern Italy. I think more than anything I could be happy in a small place on the white sands of a Caribbean island, cooking, reading, listening to music, watching movies, eating, running, (chasing my wife!?!) following the lives of our children and know, anything but WORK!

Us!•7)  My birthday, May 24th is the day before my anniversary, May 25th and for years I used to complain that it in some way detracted from my birthday. You know, sort of like a person whose birthday is in December so that Christmas overshadowed the occasion. However about 9 years ago, I came to realize that my wife was the best gift I had ever received in my entire life. I know, it may seem corny but it's the truth and for that I am eternally grateful!

Alrighty now, I finally got that out of the way and I procrastinated so long that all of the people I was going to tag have a been tagged by others and even written their respective posts so... Everyone gets a free ride today! Happy New Year!

Hi Russell, I am figuring out that the meme is some sort of "tell all" and i probably won't ever do one. Your is very revealing and for those of us who really know you, this is the truth! You are never one to hide your personality! HHappy New Year to you and MMargaret and your family!

Posted by Jeannette Spinelli (Avenue One Properties) about 1 year ago

Woo-Hoo now this is an interesting post! These meme's are pretty revealing and I have read others but yours are always a lot more detailed (and fairly entertaining too!) You do have some crazy musical and movie tastes and I will say that I know for a fact, you have not had to assume the Samuel Jackson role in quite awhile! Happy New Year to you and your girl Margaret!!

Posted by Allysoun Musslewhite (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.) about 1 year ago

And what's with that Eraserhead trailer? Well you did say that it was the "WEIRDEST" movie you have ever seen!

Posted by Allysoun Musslewhite (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.) about 1 year ago

Russell, I cannot believe how revealing you are in these MEME articles. Of course, anyone who is around you for long realizes that everything written here is completely TRUE! And that not a bad thing at all! Happy New Year!

Posted by Scott Harvey (AvenueOne Properties) about 1 year ago

Jeannette MeMe's are a kind of tell all but they are a great way to learn more about the members here and I do kind of go overboard when I respond but it is me after all! For better or worse!?!?!

Allysoun Of course it's me all over and most of the people I know are okay with it uh...I mean me! HAH! and I did say that Eraserhead was incredibly weird!

Scott Meme'a are supposed to be revealing but I am thinking I let a little too much out at times...or NOT! You know it's what makes horse races and different people are attracted to different types in business so it all works out...sort of!

Hey Russell,

Ray Charles explained it like this, and I paraphrase: "There are only two kinds of music.  Good music and bad music.  If you like listening to it, that's the good music."  :)

Hi Russell-What a awesome MeMe. Way to go Russell! I loved our mutual friend Gail's as well. speaking of Miss Gail. She caught a bit of a bug. I think that fine lady overdid on Christmas preparations. Two of my fav folks here in the rain have had very interesting lives and both are folks of high integrity and I have the utmost respect for both of you. I have to tell your MeMe was worth the wait my friend. My favorite part of the whole Meme was your saying your wife was the best gift you ever received. Now that isn't corny, that is so awesome. In this day and age that is so refreshing to hear. Congratulations on finding your soulmate. I wish you and your wife a very Happy New Year and many more years of wedded bliss.  God Bless :-)

Bruce What a great quote, I do have a great love of music and te way it can make you fell at the same time! Thanks for dropping by, I always l;look forward to your thoughtful comments!

Pat Hello my friend, I am sorry to hear about Gail and will check in soon and also take a look at her version of this meme! I was a little more open than usual and who knows how that wil pan out but one thing for sure is that my wife is truly a gift to me and our family! Oh, I forgot to mention that I do also like Country music too -in measured doses-and was actually listening to George Jones tonight

Erin Good to hear from you and it's been great getting to know you too! Thanks for the comment and I am very fortunate to have such a pretty wife (who is also 9 1/2 years younger, who is also a lot fun and puts up with me and on and on!

Well, well, well...I am happy that you decided to wait a little longer to post more "real estate related" stuff! I have to tell you I also love that scene from Pulp Fiction and it's good to know that you do not go into that mode very often. You are actually great to work with and I know it takes a lot of really bad behavior for you to actually get mad!

Posted by Michelle about 1 year ago

Back to #2...

Does you wallet read "Bad Mutha F----"?

I love Samuel L Jackson and I really love Pulp Fiction!  I could quote it all day.

Russell - Reading this post, I realized that you and I are friends for many reasons.  We have a LOT in common, with the notable exception of the running (I prefer cycling).  Did you rob the cradle, by the way?  Kidding, of course.  I look forward to finally meeting your wife someday.  We should all go to dinner sometime!

Hi Russell!
Well, if there was ever a person that I was glad I passed on a meme to, it's you!  A funny thing...there isn't one thing that you said that surprises me!  Anyone who writes like you do must be a person with a plethera of interests!  I would imagine that as long as the people who are on the other end of a real estate escrow keep it honest and ethical, you don't have a my husband would say, you don't "suffer fools" well.  Am I close?  I don't know who is luckier...your wife for having you in her life, or you for having such a wonderful wife in yours. Either way, I think you both won!  Thanks for was really fun!

Russell, great insight into some special things about you. Thanks for sharing. We share the running thing although your distances are quite further and also the birthday and anniversary dates are close together with me too. I hope to do more of that traveling that you said you enjoyed so much.

Hi Russell-I had to just laugh about your comment about you liking a little country music. One of these days I'll have to put my music on here and maybe I'll make you a convert to a little country music anyways.

BTW I bookmarked the post to come back for the further comments and you see I came back. ;-)

:-) Happy New Year my friend. You are a special and rare fellow. God Bless and have many happy travels.

Russell, how nice to read such a positive and loving comments about how your wife was and is the best Birthday present you ever got. I'm sure she feels the same.  Happy New Year and may 2009 bring us all a better improved economy!

Posted by Gena Riede, Real Estate Broker Sacramento CA Real Estate (916) 417-2699 (Riede Real Estate, Lic. 01310792) about 1 year ago

Michelle I know, I know...I really am going to follow Rich's advice and start posting at least 3 real estate related articles a week with some of these fun posts in between! And yes, it does take a lot rile me up these days! (too much wasted energy!)

Amanda Girl you are very funny! I did hand some of those wallets out at Christmas one year as gag gifts and should have kept one myself! Yeah, I am a Pulp Fiction fan and my other favorite movie from that year was Forrest Gump...Yeah, I know, quite the contrast, just like my musical tastes!

Karen I have traveled all my life. When I was single I spent a lot of time in the Caribbean and a t one time was trying to find a spot to build a small home that could be rented out while I was back in Texas. (My construction background was involved) I do love a lot of different places and still have more to see. A couple of years ago, my wife gave me a book "1000 place to see before you Die" a travelers life companion and we were amazed at the number of places we have seen together and look forward to seeing others on this incredible list!

Susan As you can imagine life with me is not always a day at the beach and that's one of the things I like about her. She is patient and loving but she can be more than a handful at times too. I mean who else could put up with me...or her?!?!?! I like to think we are the best we could ever find for each other and she agrees but also says it's open to periodic review!

Sally I have also enjoyed getting to know you better through your blog too. I don't think it's a bad thing to speak your mind and I am rarely as difficult as I may have portrayed in my post. Frankly, anyone who goes to the trouble to lie to me, abuse my trust, and willingly try my sensibilities is going to get my full attention and a direct, non-nonsense analysis of the situation. I do not shy away from confrontation.

Liz Hi there and how is life in the colder north! I am flattered that you dropped by! I am happy to know a fellow traveler and one who shares so many interests! My Father always told me that people like us would never have a problem with "retirement" and that's a very good thing! We have been to New York three times (twice for the NYC marathon) and were in Paris in 2006 and I just fell in love with the city. BTW the next time you are in Texas call me and I will buy your lunch or better yet, we can get Jason to buy!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Karen You forgot to login and yes there is some salsa around somewhere...The meme's are funny and I probably do reveal more than most but nearly everyone who meets me learns it all sooner or later!

June Thank you for such flattering compliments! I have been blessed for most of my life and had the good fortune to pursue most of my interests. You are correct that my greatest blessings come from meeting my wife and our family together!

Now about the Cowboys...Oh I wish they would bench Romo and put him at back up! Only problem is who would start??? And I know y'all wanted Bill back too and I am looking forward to more football discussions with you my friend!

Jason I am always honored when you drop by! I did "Rob the Cradle" as my wife is almost 10 years younger than me and I can still keep up! You and I do indeed have a lot in common and so many interests that we enjoy discussing (which is one of the reasons lunch usually lasts 2-3 hours) and I am looking forward to more in the New Year my friend!

Paula Thanks, I usually enjoy these but take longer than most to reply and probably a little to revealing at that! I like your husband's phrase "suffer fools" because it certainly applies to me. I really am more of a peace maker and voice of reason over the last years but don't get me started! LOL As far as the lucky one in my marriage, I would think that most folks(including me) thinks it's me! But we both won the lottery when we met!

Gary Hi there and thank you for dropping in; I don't run long distance except for once or twice a year (and the training it takes to get there) mostly, I run 4-5 miles three times a week with a long run every other Sunday. I hope you get to travel as much as possible because it is one of the things we enjoy most and it's great to see how others live at the same time!

Pat Because I am such a Rock fan people are always amazed that I also have a love for old school, hard core country. But even up to the Randy Travis, George Strait (my second cousin) and Garth Brooks eras! So I am positive I would enjoy any of your music too! Happy New Year to you and yours too my friend!

Gena took me awhile (but that's the same for all men...right?) and I am truly the lucky one. Happy New Year to you too my friend. I look forward to knowing you and reading your posts and exchanging comments in 2009!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Nice MeMe Russell!  About #1, I think every runner has that love-hate relationship!  It's just tough to get going but, once you do, it's downhill (no pun intended)!

As for #2--GREAT BIG DITTO!  What's funny though, is when I meet another agent before we start the negotiating process, they think I'm a pushover (or a dumb blonde, I haven't figured out which one it is!) and they inevitably try to pull something and get 'busted!'  My friends laugh about it because I am the absolute easiest person to get along with until you try to mess with my family or my clients!

It is also so refreshing to read a man's perspective that is similar to mine regarding our spouses!  My hubby and I do everything together and I love hearing that you and your wife share your passions--no matter how silly the world may think they are!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours!

Lynne You are right and I may be revealing more about myself than others but some very good folks here at Active Rain Rich, Jason, Jason and others have encouraged me to be myself! Knowing me personally like you do means that I am pretty much myself online and in the real world! Happy New Year to you too!

Chad If we do indeed share birthdays then you must be a lot of fun. I have met two others with our birthday and they were both incredibly fun and intelligent. Okay, that sounds egotistical but it's always fun meeting people born around our time of the year and yes I am also a Dylan Fan! Thanks again for dropping by!

Gail Good to see that you are feeling better and I hope you don't give those people your cold! I have actually been showing property yesterday and today from phone and email inquiries. I hope it's s sign that things are picking up! I look forward to your comments later! Thanks again and Happy New Year to you and yours!

Mattie Happy New year to you too! Have fun tonight!

Debe Yes it's true about exercise! and the #2 fact is something to behold. I am usually serious about business but also affable and easy going. The shock value when I have to put my foot down is all the more useful because it comes as a complete surprise to those who underestimate our easy going nature for weakness! And as far as sharing, we do a lot of that and still have time to pursue our own interests. I pretty much knew I had it made when she went fishing with me in Alaska a while back. I was standing in the stream and watching her happily casting and catching fish and she really has no interest in that sort of thing. She just went along because I asked and so if she ever asks me to attend a scrap booking event or anything else I will go and find something to do! The main thing is we have our own interests too and that makes for a good balance!

Happy New Year to you and yours too!

Russell - I enjoyed learning more about you.

I think we're alike in that agents find us either the easiest or hardest to deal with - depends on how they do their job!

Love to read? Buy the Kindle from  I've had it for over a year and it's wonderful for travel, working out, unexpected waits, curling up to read, etc. Doesn't save as much money as your trips to the library, but saves a lot.

I love to travel, too - going to Costa Rica with my husband in January. I'll think of you on that nice, warm beach.

I like the "tradition" you started on memes. I don't mind answering them, but I hate to impose on anyone by passing them along - too much like a chain letter. I'd much rather say, "Here's mine - and my "pass-through" is not directed to any individuals, but to any and all who'd like to answer."

Happy New Year~

Hi Russell- I thoroughly enjoyed reading your MeMe, I had commented...err...tried to comment earlier but I clicked on one of the links in the post, and my comment disappeared.  First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Hope your celebration was spirited.  I was in bed at 8:30 with this clingy cold but did get up at 11:30 for the obligatory champagne toast...LOL then back to bed at 12:30.  My sister is still with me till the 7th, and we're out doing stuff.  My hubby is golfing with her now and tomorrow we'll do the beach.

My birthday and anniversary are also both in missed being a Taurus by a few days, but that's OK....Gemini's have very interesting personalities, the twins you know!  I love your attitude about life from both the serious and fun-filled perspectives.  One without the other would be a little shallow...not a problem for you :-)  Here's to a great new year...whatever it brings is what I commit to enjoying.

I am amazed that you are so transparent but it's goes to the honesty you have always displayed! I hope you have a great 2009 and I look forward to seeing you in the coming year.

PS. Keep up the interesting blogging too. We laways enjoy your fun and interesting outlook mon Austin, Texas!

Sharon Thanks so much, I am sure we are cut from the same cloth business wise because we both work hard and always take a professional approach and though affable most of the time do not have much tolerance for laziness or sloppy work ethics.

Thanks for the tip on Kindle, I am going to look that up this weekend because as you already know my wife and I are always looking for travel opportunities. I have been to Costa Rica twice. Once in 1974 and again in 2003 when I accompanied my sons Scout Troop to Back Packing the Oso Peninsula jungle and also through the rain forests. Incredible country and yes while we are quite chilly here, you will be enjoying one of the most beautiful natural places on the earth!

As far as the passing of the meme, I sometimes do but don't really like to impose so I just keep reading the blogs of people whom I enjoy and have met at this great site. have great trip and I look forward to your next visit t Austin in the future!

PS. Are you going to be teaching any of the 3rd day CLHMS classes and do I have that right? I will have to check in at the sire or email you! Thanks again

Hi Betina I thank you and I am glad we met here! It's funny how many things we realize we have in common when we are not just dealing business! Music downloads! My son used a flash drive to nab some music from my laptop and I guess it's okay....Oh well see you soon.

Liz Hi there, just holler a day or say on advance and welcome to Austin!

Jimmy I am certainly glad to hear that and truly it is a pleasure knowing you as a friend all these years! Best of the new year to you!

Jeannette Thank you, I try to keep it interesting and have also tried to keep my posts shorter but with little success as you can see. Best of the New Year to you too!

Patty Thanks for dropping by and welcome to Active Rain. You are going to enjoy this place and I am so glad you signed up. See you next week!

Ruseell - I love your Meme. Good for you about your running. I have yet to run a marathon - but it is defiitely a life goal. I need to get some things out of the the way and then I will do it - maybe run one behind you!!!!  You are right about putting a photograph of yourself running as your profile picture . . . I share you varied interest in music, and travel, and need to find more time for it. I would love to read about your travel adventures.

Thanks for sharing and happy new year! Here is to a great and prosperous 2009 to you and your family!

James Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate that and wish you and your family the best of the new year too!

Chris Ann Good to see you and yes, I have never forgotten an anniversary!

Gail Happy New Year to you too my friend! I heard you were under the weather and hope you are feeling much better now! I learned about the twins when I was building furniture back in the later 70's. A client insisted that his person read a chart on me  and it said some pretty funny things and most were very true! I don't know how that is supposed to work but I will say that if the moon can move the ocean, it can surely do something to us little humans. I mean, all sorts of craziness occurs during a full moon..right? I love your attitude "to a great new year...whatever it brings is what I commit to enjoying." That's a great way to look forward to a new year!

Elizabeth I like reading meme's for the same reasons; they give us greater insight into the folks here at AR and helps us to find those we like, learn from and hopefully will send business some day! Thanks for dropping by, I always enjoy reading your blog and look forward to more in the new year!

Dave Thank you so much for dropping by! You do know me all too well and we still talk and even hang out! Amazing! I hope 2009 is a good year for you and yours too!

Sharon Good to hear from you! I enjoyed reading your meme too and we do have a number of great things in common! I still love running in spite of my periodic complaints and encourage anyone who likes running, walking, biking or any other exercise to keep it up for all the benefits. I hope you get to do more traveling in the future. It's one of the many things my wife and I share with a passion. Happy New Year to you and yours too!

Just wanted to say that this was particularly good. I look forward to reading your interesting and sometimes provocative posts in the next year! happy New Year to you and all your family!

Russell, This was your last post - 12/30/2008.  So far no 2009 posts.  Has New Year's Eve ended yet in Texas?  We know you folks have a"bigger and better" reputation,   Karen

I don't know how I missed this post but I believe that it is one of my favorites! You actually have a lot of left brain talent that I never knew about! I knew that you had a heart the size of Texas and that shows in the comments about your birthday and anniversary. You are an amazing person and I can't believe that I had to read your blog to find out more about YOU! Thanks for always being so positive about life!

Scott Thanks again for your continued support and best of the New Year to you too my friend!

Karen Your comment made me laugh out LOUD! Sometimes wee do make a big deal out of a lot of stuff but New Years was quiet and fun at the same time. I am just procrastinating at this point and also putting together my plan for 2009. I do have some good ideas and will have something out at the end of the week. I am also going to start posting real estate info, listings, open houses and market updates (Yes, I know, I've been saying that since the fall!) but plan to post 2 or 3 at a tome interspersed with the subjects that are more fun and/or informative!

Liz Thank you very much my friend! You actually do know me TOO well because you know I have a seriously stubborn streak at times! HAH! I am glad we are partners at AvenueOne Properties and even happier that we are friends!

Thanks for the info---I love the realization about your birthday.  Anniversaries are gifts as well

Gena Ha are making me blush and truth be told I am NO saint. Just ask most of the folks who have to put up with me all the time! However i do my best and seem to have polished my rougher edges over the last 10 years or so (I am kind of a slow learner!) Great hearing from you my friend!

Shelton Thanks for your comment, it's true and it just took me a little while to truly appreciate the gift of my anniversary along with a lot of other good things in my life!

Russell, this is so revealing and so true! I do not know that i would have the gumption to tell all as you have here! Well maybe you left out something but you are really a person who is up front about everything! happy New Year to you and your sweet family!

Posted by Anne Giles (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.) about 1 year ago

AnneIt's funny but as you know, I am not all that shy but at the same time this probably was a little more open that usual and I actually had fun with it! Thanks for the comment and best of the new year to you and yours too!

Hi Russell,
Another MeMe making the rounds?  Oh my!  I enjoy reading them but have "retired from the MeMe game".

Your wife is very lucky to have a man who appreciates her so very much.

Cynthia, so good hearing from you! Actually I don't mind all that much, it's an interesting way to get to know others as well as revealing more than some profile data about ourselves! And as far as my wife...I am still the lucky one! Have a great week!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Sooo sweet Russell!  my mom's B-day and anniversary are a day apart and one year (a Lean year, according to my dad) she got a shoe for her B-day and the other for her anniversary!

I agree with the whole running thing, you just have to get out there and do it ... not fun but once you get going it gets better.  I only had 3 pairs of pants fit me in December so that REALLY motivated me to get out there!!!!!!!!!

#3 and #5 are right up my alley. I also love traveling, but not "more than anything in the world."

Posted by Russel Ray, San Diego home inspector (Russel Ray, Property Consultant) about 1 year ago

Pippa Again, I am happy to see you back and I love that shoe idea...I think I will pull that stunt on my wife this year but maybe with some earrings! Thanks for the inspiration! And I totally get you on the running and weight deal I started slacking off right after Thanks giving and gained 6 1/2 lbs in 5 weeksw! YIKES and but I did start back because i alread signed upo for that 3M 1/2 marathon in Feb!

Oh Russel! We are in complete agreement on those items and I am Soooooo happy you pointed out my typo "more than anything in the world." I will correct that now, traveling together is in the top 4 for us sure but certainly NOT #1, 2 or #3,. Thanks, I am still laughing!

I'll bring this one back to the top - it was well worth reading.  You sound like a very centered person.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Georgina,

I wish the posts were like the old days so that a comment would take it back to the top and make it available at different times of the day. I often miss great posts because I am not on when they are first submitted and recently have met fewer new bloggers. Hopefully that will change and thank you for stopping by!
