A Pictorial Run at Austin's Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake was known as Town lake for many years and recently was renamed in memory of the late Lady Bird Johnson. The trails around the lake are flooded with runners , bikers, walkers and folks who just want to get outside and enjoy some of  our "mostly" great Austin weather. On any weekend beginning late summer, you will see herds of people training for various runs in the fall and leading up to the 3M half marathon and finally the Austin Marathon in Feburary. I have trained for six marathons and one ultra marathon running on these trails and I can think of no better place to train, run, walk or just plain people watch than the loop around Lady Bird Lake! This post originally began as a Wordless Wednesday entry but since it does not fit all the parameters it is now just a post of pictures around my favorite place to run here in Austin, Texas. Enjoy and maybe I will see you on the running trail!

What a great way to do a Localism post and one for "wordless wed." at the same time!

Posted by Mattie Lewis (AvenueOne Properties) about 1 year ago

Hi Russell-I've missed you. Just returned. Just did a short Hello post yesterday and then my W.W. Just a few minutes ago.  I love your pics they are magnificent. Excellent photography. Well done my friend. I see you are are a guy that makes up his own rules. I love it. Title it Wordless Wednesday but don't actually post it to the group so you don't get the boot for posting more than one pic. Smart! Good chatting with you again.   I love it I'm the first to comment. WOO HOO  P.S. Well I missed first by a minute. Dang!

Great pictures of one of the "Jewels" of Austin. That's such a wonderful place to run, how come there are no pictures of you?

Posted by Scott Harvey (AvenueOne Properties) about 1 year ago

Russell you have some really beautiful shots. I especially like the ones of the lake. Up here is Mass it is down right chilly and I am already looking forward to Spring.

Posted by Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) about 1 year ago
What a cool idea to just use pictures and no words to highlight our wonderful Hike & Bike Trail here in Austin! I saw you on the running trail last week but you were up on the Congress Bridge and I was on the trail below. Are you planning on entering any of the upcoming running events after the first of the year?
Posted by Lynne about 1 year ago

Mattie Thanks for the idea. It's not in the guidelines for the WW group but it is a fun way to do the Lady Bird Lake post for Localism!

Pat Great to see you back! Thanks so much for the compliments. I had to carry a smaller camera on my run to make it easier to take the photos but it worked out well. Really it's nice because the place is so beautiful that I don't have to have any particular skills, the pictures just sort of take themselves. You are right about WW, I like the concept but wanted to do a pictorial about Lady Bird Lake and there is no single picture that tells it all so I sorta hitched a ride on the WW name...

Scott The Lake is one of the most beautiful places here in Austin and a wonderful natural resource that everyone can share! As far as pictures of me, I wanted to emphasize the lovelier aspects of lady Bird Lake...

Bill It is a very pretty place to run and the scenery is always changing. It actually got chilly last night and we had some sleet and light snow after yesterday's high of 81 degrees?!?!? Only in Texas do we have such odd ball weather!

Lynne I have been meaning to do a post about my runs on Lady Bird Lake for awhile and since it's "Wordless Wednesday" figured that it would be a good time. Yes. I am in some mild training for the 3M half marathon that is scheduled for February and I really need to get on it. I am not planning on a PR time but just want to finish comfortably!

Russell - Looks so beautiful. I really need to mark Austin as one of the places to visit, and hopefully sooner than later. ~Rita

Posted by Kenna Real Estate about 1 year ago

Russell:  Hard to pick a favorite photo in that group.  What lovely scenery.  Maybe I'd get out a bit more to walk or jog if I had those views!

Posted by Chris Ann Cleland, Associate Broker (Long & Foster REALTORS®, Gainesville, VA) about 1 year ago

Rita Come on down but do it in the Fall or Spring...the weather is a bit hot in the Summer. My old running pal moved to Denver and I am a bit intimated running with him now whenever he visits. At a mile high he has developed some pretty good lung power!

Chris Ann You nailed it, running is so much better when the scenery is beautiful and we also have so good people watching. I took the pictures at a slower time of day. Sometimes there are literally hundreds of people out running, hiking and biking!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Thanks for taking us on that run with you. I truly enjoyed the scenery. JUST BEAUTIFUL! NOW...if only I could experience the calorie burn you did!!! LOL ~GBU~

Great scenic Austin photos Russell. I remember running the Capitol 10K there one time and it brings back memories.

Oh Russell- You CRACK me up, now you and Patty P together...I would probably die laughing!!!  One other thing, I didn't count your words, but if they exceed 50, you'll get the boot.  You are not supposed to get points for WW posts except through the comments.  Speechless Sunday is different, but hey...go ahead make up your own rules ~ YOU & PATTY P ~ LOL

Now on a serious note....(hmmm, can't think of a serious face in my goody bag)...you didn't think I would miss your first WW, did you?  Your picture...umm...pictures are very depictive of the Lake.  I love you man!!  Thanks for helping with my camera upgrade.  Per Michael Cole, I'm thinking of going with the 18-55mm lens.  I'm very excited to be getting a DSLR even if it is heavier than my PowerShot.

Elizabeth I appreciate that, I enjoy running on some different levels (it's just getting myself started that is the hardest part) but besides making me easier to get along with, I do like the calorie burning so I can eat pretty much anything I like!

Gary Glad to hear that you are also a runner. I was in Dallas at Thanksgiving and ran in y'alls 8 mile Turkey Trot. I love that race and it was actually my first road race many years ago when I ran it in 1983 with my Father and brother!

Gail Yes, really it's funny because I figured I would just kill two birds with one stone and use it as a Localism post. I am glad i did NOT post it in the WED. group because I...wellyou know, sometimes I neglect to read the instructions! Good luck on your new camera, we bought a Nikon D80 and though a bit pricey, love it and will use it for years! (I took these pics with my daughters compact Sony because the other is too bulky and heavy to carry running! I am really gald you stop by because i always check your blog to see what you are up to!

Betina I like that picture a lot too and have to tell you that I just get lucky sometimes. It's pretty easy to get good shots when the scenery is so beautiful! I am also laughing about your "drive by" comments. Your pictures are really great these days and I just wish I could be at least partially as prolific as you and Jason! Thanks for stopping by, now I am headed to see what you are up to at your blog!

Your photos are great! Crisp and certainly show off the area beautifully.

Russell, I do not know from Wordless Wednesday but these are some beautiful pictures of the running trail at Lady Bird lake!

Posted by Anne Giles (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.) about 1 year ago

Jimmy I took the Mopac to Congress loop which ids 4.5 miles but I add that pretty wooded strecch near the Statesman make it an even 5 miles!

Cynthia I really appreciate that, it is certainly a remarkable place and one of the all time best spots to run, walk and people watch!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Gena actually, I got the WW thing a little out of whack. We are supposed to only use 1 picture and it's supposed to be placed in that group under the guidelines but I just took the idea and turned it into a pictorial about my favorite running trail and posted it as a Localism blog at the same time...I know, I need to try and behave! Thanks for dropping by!

Anne It was a beautiful day and I have wanted to post about the lake for quite awhile! It's easy to take great pictures when the scenery is so beautiful!

Hey Russell,

Great pix.  By the way, if you're running on that lake, I'm gonna need some of those shoes!  :)

Russell, glad to hear you ran the Turkey Trot. I even wrote a blog about it after the run in case you missed it. Someone in the Rain thought you were in Dallas that day.

Theses are wonderful pictures of our beloved lady Bird lake! I do have a suggestion, you should probably change the title "slightly" because it does not fit into the WW category of using only one picture and you might be confusing some folks! I do have an idea for a true WW post. How about one of those fantastic helicopter shots from awhile back! Just a thought!!

Posted by Mattie Lewis (AvenueOne Properties) about 1 year ago

Not Yet Licensed You are so funny and we both know that only one person has managed that feat! I am changing the title today (and also) the wordless wed. part because it does not really fit the WW format! Oh well, it was a fun post anyway!

Gary Thanks for commenting and I am going to check out that post after I finish these replies! I have become a fan of your blog posts!

Mattie You are correct and yes I will change the title and I also have some great ideas for a "real" WW post next week! I am just happy that everyone enjoyed all the picture of where we run!

Beautiful photos Russell, what a pretty lake.  How large is it?  I grew up on a lake and could never live away from water.  I love the trails around the lake.  We only have  a tiny bit of that which is actually river front.

Debe Thank you, I have been working on posting better pictures lately and try to improve with every post..And yes, as far as calorie burning, it's one of the main reasons I run, so I can eat pretty much anything I like!

Karen Thanks, these are some of the views I enjoy on my runs at the Lake during the week and it certainly makes exercising a lot more fun!

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (AvenueOne Properties, Austin Texas Real Estate) about 1 year ago

Tammy Actually. "Lake" is something of a misnomer. The body of water we call Lady Bird Lake is actually a section of the Colorado River that is dammed at each end to create a constant level "lake" Lady bird Lake extends from Tom Miller Dam to Longhorn Dam and I am not sure the distance HOWEVER the Trails I run extend fro the Mopac pedestrian bridge to Longhorn Dam/Pleasant Valley Road. That route is 10.1 miles and is good for long runs but there are also bridges at Lamar 3 mi., S. 1st, 4mi. and Congress 4.5 mi.

I usually add a egg bear the Statesman that is a beautifully wooded area to make my runs during the week right at 5 mi.

Although the weather is becoming more inclement, I know many people who will be heading to the trail as part of their new Year's resolutions! Nice pictures!

Posted by Anne Giles (AvenueOne Properties, Inc.) about 1 year ago

Very nice pics, nothing against Mrs J. but I think Town Lake was more descriptive.  At least they did not Sell the naming rights such as ... "Dell Lake" or "ACL Lake" ... or, maybe they did.

Posted by Bryan Anderson at RE/MAX River City about 1 year ago

Anne I am going for a run later and the trail is filling up with lots of people with their new "resolutions" I've seen as I have run a couple of times since the new year began. Thanks for the kudos, pictures are easy when the subject matter is s nice!

Bryan I agree and having lived here since the mid 70's, I am trying to break my habit of calling it that! You are also absolutely correct about the "naming rights", at various times in our history it seems anything in Austin has been for sale! Thanks for stopping by!
